CURRENCY

The local currency is the guilder, also known as the florin (abbreviated as NAFl), which is broken down into cents. Guilder coins, among the only square coins in the world, come in 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent, 1 guilder and 5 guilder values. There are a few 5 guilder notes still being used, but the most common paper denominations are 10, 25, 50, 100, and 250.

U.S. currency is also accepted virtually everywhere.

TAX

All hotels charge a 5% government tax and a 3% turnover tax. Larger hotels will tack on a 10% to 15% service charge. Restaurants add 10% to 15% service charge. For current exchange rate, see the see the currency converter under the Trip Planning section on the Caribbean home page.

TIPPING

10% to 15% tip is customary but optional for hotels and restaurants, where as taxi drivers have come to enjoy 10%. All-inclusive resorts don't expect to be tipped.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES

Traveler's cheques are accepted throughout the country.

CREDIT CARDS

Most major credit cards are accepted everywhere. Many can be used to obtain cash advances at banks and ATMs.

BANKING HOURS AND AUTOMATED TELLERS

Banks open Monday through Friday at 8:30am. First Caribbean International Bank closes at 2:30pm and the Royal Bank of Trinidad & Tobago closes at 3:00pm (Friday at 4:00pm). There are no ATMs on the islands.
